The blending of alternative materials, tools and expediency pushes motifs to shift. Motifs often fall incidental to straightforward marks made with the body and tool. Vines become dots of paint pulled in a scalloped fashion. Tulips and pomegranates are stylized to fill space. These vegetal abstractions become ornament, and spatial solutions. I find this beautiful, and it has informed the way I think about mark and gesture. The vegetal ornament I produce across my work is a reaction to a previous flower, a simplification, or a subtle shift.
