I stitch and construct to share the stories of my foremothers and myself. Working between ceramics and fiber I generate objects almost suited for domestic space: a quilt that provides no warmth, a pillow that doesn’t comfort. I borrow and digest textiles, wallpaper, gardens and women’s bodies to develop my own alphabet of repetitive marks. Through a personal and political lens I participate in a dialogue with art, craft, and feminism. I advocate for decoration as a medium of power. The orange-drenched gallery complements the desaturated palette of creams, whites, and earthy terra-cotta browns. Textural floral motifs partner with traditional quilt block patterns to speak about the intimate domestic space. Flower buds, or perhaps flowers past their prime, are included in all works. Sometimes they are flat abstracted renderings, other times as bulb-shaped unglazed ceramic components stacked and bunched with muslin leaves stuffed with sand. Each piece dwells on observations of daily flora; the tender rise and lush decay of blossoms, the garden, and the domestic landscape of the vase. This exhibition reflects on the endurance and end of a long summer. The combination of terra-cotta vessels and stitched cushions speaks of the body; the garments we wrap ourselves in and the pillows we rest our heads on. Textile intersects ceramic form hugging and lidding the openness of the vessel. A nod to the gendered history of flower painting, often relegated to women, these objects flatten and become still lifes. These works continue an investigation of domestic space, feminism, and material culture. The title, Post Bloom Prune, refers to when flowers are “dead headed” or snipped off. The end of a long growing season is marked with decay, a removal of beauty. These works consider the marking of time associated with blooms and the shifts in our lived environment. Fascinated with domestic objects and material mis-performance, the artist combines vinyl and ceramic to support, protect, bulge, and defamiliarize objects. Terra-cotta hangers support vinyl pouches of delicate ceramic leaves derived from plants and women’s bodies. Like most vegetal ornament in decorative art history, the themes of sexuality and abundance are read between the lines, or in this case, between the leaves. Wainwright’s interest in the couch, the “ugly” couch in particular, is also present in this exhibition. Often encased in a clear plastic slipcover to shield them from the humans that sit upon them, these “ugly” couches live a strange life between idyllic landscape, lush garden, and our popcorn dust. The motifs that dot the surface of our beloved couches often go overlooked, and Wainwright is on a mission to make us look again. The objects in Bedclothes are transformations of pattern into sculpture. Wainwright explores the intersection of materials: ceramic, fiber, and paint to estrange the things we’re most familiar with. Everyday domestic situations are referenced in the objects of Bedclothes. Padded and patterned blankets are slung over wooden racks. A half-made too-small bed occupies a corner of the gallery. But this work is a stranger. The colors are overly saturated, and any utility has been removed. Instead, they function as visual objects. Bedclothes borrows repetitive domestic motifs from couches, curtains, and wallpaper. Modernism excluded these decorative things from being powerful; tied them to femininity and a lack of self-control. Wainwright reclaims this practice with a feminist agenda.
